H won the toss and bowled, a decision vindicated immediately when Hakey struck with a perfect yorker second ball. It was almost a two wicket maiden, but the edge behind didn’t stick.

Wickets flowed though, and Victor did take two catches and a stumping in the match, his best return for the ducks. Lewis injured his foot in a bizarre warm up incident involving Pards’ bullet arm, and left the field after the first over. He played no further part in the game so we were down to 10 for the rest of it.

Ben struggled for rhythm on the slopey run up on the end wicket from the church end, but controlled it well for 3-26, just pipped by Tappers’ 3-24. Hakey was frugal and effective with a terrific off the reel spell of 2-10. Six down at drinks, the foot came off the gas a bit and we gave them probably 30 more than we should have, but they were eventually all out in the 30th for 123.

Dom stepped in for the injured Lewis and looked good until he skied one. I got the most ridiculous ball I’ve ever faced, a pacey shooter from halfway down that arrowed back into the stumps from 2 feet wide, never more than an inch off the floor, the kind of ball that’s somehow inevitable when things are just not going your way.

Ben and Henry rode the storm on a clearly sporty wicket, and came out the other side without further loss, seeing us home to another convincing win. We are now comfortably back in the middle of the table with only six league games left.
