At the pitch inspection, both sides seemed to agree that the pitch looked a bit dodgy and would probably be a dog. Our pitch reading creds took another blow as it played probably the best yet this year. A few kept low but mostly it had reasonable bounce and good carry. We’re all very bad at reading pitches.
It was an abrasive track though and the ball was wrecked within six overs. All the lacquer was gone and it had chunks out of it. Then it rained, and the ball went all swollen and lumpy like it had some exotic skin disease. So the normally powerful advantage of the new ball was negated pretty quickly.
Hakey enjoyed the bounce and set about bruising their top order for the lols. Mark C took a cracking catch low to his left at point off Tappers, two balls after I had refused a sitter from the same guy. Angus also took a neat catch off Henry to dismiss the lad who had just slog swept him over the trees for six. Henry then paid him to drop the next one to avoid the 5-fer jug. Without flash it was a generally decent bowling and fielding display and they were all out for 152.
Their opening bowlers were decent and we started slowly. Then we carried on slowly. We were getting nervous about quite how slowly, and decided we’d try and stay none-down till drinks before erupting into frenetic action. Then both got out before then anyway. But the blunt-the-attack tactic worked just fine, and Henry batted as well has he has for years for a chanceless 79*. Highlights included nearly taking a guy’s leg off with a full toss smeared to square leg. This guy then came on to bowl, and, no doubt somewhat distracted, conceded 18 off an over of full tosses to really give the chase momentum, and later a back foot punch to the square cover fence that belonged in a different game altogether. H was well supported by the Colbourne bros and Rob, who entertainingly kicked his gloves off the field in frustration at his dismissal, and finally Tappers with a hooked 4 to finish it with a few overs to spare.
