After our last game against Bashley that we lost but probably should have won, this was the opposite: a win we probably should have lost. 24-3 after 13 looked pretty grim, but Henry redressed the damage with a quickfire 37 including two massive sixes over square leg into the poplars by the river, ending in tame fashion with a chop on that dribbled into the stumps with just enough force to remove a bail. Dave and Victor steadied, and Mark enjoyed a welcome return to runs with a 50, reached off the penultimate ball, before comically throwing his bat to the square leg umpire and being run out on the last. 146 felt at least 50 short in light of the bowling (average) and pitch (good) but it was something to bowl at. We bowled well but, after an early edge to slip off Tappers, were not making breakthroughs. The bowling change did the trick with a run out off Tim’s first ball, a direct hit from Gary from deep square that surprised and delighted him as much as the rest of us. Then they came relatively steadily until captain Adie Hunt settled in and decided he’d have to go for it. If he’d stayed in they surely would have got there, and we did our best to help him, dropping him twice in successive balls. His end at last was almost identical to Henry’s. Then we really felt in it again, and by the time they were seven down they needed almost a run a ball off the last three overs. But it didn’t get that far, as Tim finished the game in three balls, mopping up the tail in spectacular fashion with a hat-trick, caught, caught, bowled. A terrific climax to a squeaky game we looked unlikely to win for most of it. Always the best ones.
