When a team is bowled out for a very low total, there’s usually a dreadful pitch or difficult conditions to blame somewhere.
Not this time. Due to a bit of rain in the week the pitch was softer and slower than it had been for the friendlies, but it was a perfectly decent deck and a lovely sunny afternoon. Like most Damerham wickets, it just demanded a bit of patience. The main reason for the low total was a concerted determination to swing across the line.
Hakey bowled exceptionally well and hit the stumps at pace six times, to take an early lead in both the wickets and man-of-the-match columns. Waz and Andy bowled well in support on a seamer-light day, with 2-11 and 2-19 respectively.
We turned round before tea. Durnford bowled well and we lost wickets regularly, making it pretty clear that if they’d got to three figures it would have been a pretty nervy chase. Debutant Chris Presley showed promising determination, but unfortunately the nature of the game meant the other debutant, young Tom Parry, didn’t get to do much. The skipper hit the winning runs at five to four.
An unusual, slightly anticlimactic, but successful first league outing of the year.
