What a difference a deck makes.
Don’t usually bother with match reports for Wednesdays, because, y’know, Wednesday cricket is just a laugh and who cares, right? But this one deserves a mention.
We’ve had big scores on a Wednesday before, but usually against us. We did post 180 once, I think. But whichever way, usually scores that big don’t get chased. Tonight we chased 191.
It’s a nice little reminder that perhaps we as a side can bat after all, just not on the tracks we’ve had for the last couple of Saturdays. This pitch was a proper road, and hardly deviated off straight for seam or spin, with quick, even, predictable bounce.
We bowled averagely and fielded poorly, but the boundaries were small – Colehill is a tiny ground – and the outfield quick and bobbly. It was a sweltering day, and the lethargy in the field was visible.
Colehill’s 191 came at 11.23 an over. Pretty decent, even for 8 ball overs. (That’s 8.42 in six-ball-over speak.) Our chase went at 15.67 (11.76). Tim made 83, Henry 57* and D and Gary 20s in a chase that seemed easy and unhurried and bizarrely likely from the off.
Not only did we chase 191, we did it with 14 balls to spare. Comfortably Damerham’s highest chase AND highest score on a Wednesday night. If they’d posted a few more, the mythical 200 was well within reach. What a difference a deck makes.
