We have certainly conceded bigger scores in our time, but I’m not sure we’ve ever put in a more dispiriting performance in the field. I don’t recall ever enjoying fielding less. Even chasing leather in the baking heat while Tichborne racked up 380 wasn’t as bad as this. The Edgley brothers took the new ball, and Frode got some crazy swing, which resulted in wides and byes aplenty. After 4 overs they were 35-0, with just 4 runs off the bat. I’ve never known a game go so badly off the rails so quickly. It was extremely bizarre, and we never really recovered. We seemed beset by some collective malaise, and our fielding was either sloppy, unlucky or lackadaisical, sometimes all three at once. Never have I seen so many balls go over or under so many feet, or through so many hands. We turned dots into ones and ones into dots with gay abandon. Hacon bowled well. Everyone else did ok but not great, and whenever pressure built we released it. Graham’s knowledge of Damerham’s long history is without peer, and he’s pretty certain that our total of 57 extras is a club record. We batted pretty well. 50 opening stand, Frode atoned with a fine 82 and H made 59 in an unbeaten 136 third wicket partnership. On another day, with fewer extras and better fielding, we’d have been right in it. But not today. Chasing 272 never really looked on, and we settled for maximum batting points and a healthy 9-point loss. Which is actually pretty decent, considering how badly the first half went. We just need to write it off as a freak. After four, won two, lost two. Gonna be fine.
